What Should Happen With The Batman

Recently, there has been a lot of chatter about the upcoming Batman film, simply titled, The Batman. Oscar Isaac has been rumored to be in it, Warner Brothers has looked into having Kit Harrington star, and Ben Affleck’s script has been called the best Batman script ever written. But with Affleck in rehab, there has been a good deal of uncertainty surrounding the film.
The film currently doesn’t even have a release date, but Matt Reeves (Cloverfield, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, and War for the Planet of the Apes) is attached to direct. But this comes after Ben Affleck was meant to write, star in, and direct the movie. I would have loved to see that movie, as it would have taken the DCEU out of the hands of one director (Zack Snyder) and made it more diverse in feel. That already worked well with Wonder Woman, and it looks to be on a good track with Shazam!.
But Affleck has since stepped down as writer and director, and he looks to be all but out as the star as well. Pairing this up with today’s news that Henry Cavill will no longer be playing Superman, it seems like the perfect time for a major shakeup in the DCEU.
DC is already developing films outside of their “Universe.” Most notably, Joaquin Phoenix will be starring as the Joker in a standalone origin story. So now, with the lead actors for Batman and Superman – perhaps the two most recognizable superheroes in the world – being out of jobs, it’s time to blow up the DCEU and focus on standalone pictures. After all, out of all of the shared cinematic universes that have been attempted since the Marvel Cinematic Universe, none have succeeded.
So, DC, make a good Batman movie. Matt Reeves has a proven track record at this point and he should be allowed to do his own thing, the way Christopher Nolan did. War for the Planet of the Apes was great because it had huge consequences, but overall, it was fairly small in scope. That’s what a Batman movie should be like. Gotham City is a defined amount of space, so the story should be contained in it at this point.
Also, there are many great actors out there who could pull of this role. I don’t think Kit Harrington would be great in the role, but Warner Brothers is close to being on the right track with that sort of thinking. Find an actor with star power, but not someone who is known for one thing, the way Harrington is for Game of Thrones.
At this point, I’m happy that the DCEU is going through all of these changes. They will and should continue to go forward with projects such as Aquaman, Wonder Woman 2, and Flashpoint, but they should let them each be their own thing. Forget about competing with Marvel, because that’s never going to happen. Just make great movies about great characters and you will see the results that you want.
