Review: The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part

The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part is hilarious, well-animated, and has a great message. Ultimately, it will probably be forgettable, though. It doesn’t do anything new or exciting and some sequences go on longer than they should.
This is not a perfect movie, for sure, but it also has a lot of good going for it. But my two biggest gripes with this movie are its mediocre storyline and its forced jokes, which can play hand in hand due to the nature of the movie.
In the first LEGO Movie, we as the audience did not know what was going on in the grand scheme of things. That film throws a giant twist at you at the end. The Second Part takes this idea and has a lot of trouble doing something new with it. I honestly couldn’t tell if it was trying to be subtle, or if it was purposely telegraphing what was going on, but the real world parallels were painfully obvious the whole way through. It felt like something that was trying really hard to be clever, but whose cleverness ran out at the end of the first installment. This led to lots of meta jokes that, while funny, just didn’t have the same overall feeling as the first movie.
Now, I really don’t like judging a movie’s quality in relation to another movie, even if it is a sequel. But even on its own, lots of the jokes and emotional beats in this movie hit well in the moment, but ring hollow once the credits roll. The one aspect that worked really well, though, was the main theme. It was one of reconciliation and forgiveness and boy, was it great.
Whenever my brothers and I would fight and argue when I was growing up, my parents would remind us that we are, in fact, brothers. Everything would be so much better for us if we just learned to reconcile our differences and get along. This memory is what made me appreciate The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part so much. I saw myself in the shoes of this brother and sister who would just be better served if they listened to each other and worked out their differences. It hit home.
And this is why I love movies so much. They can teach us about life and make us think about and realize things we wouldn’t have otherwise. My brothers and I are older now. We don’t argue the way we used to. But this movie showed me the importance of our reconciliation when we were younger. It made me appreciate where we are now.
So even with a weak story and a forgettable overall cinematic feel, The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part still had a profound effect on me and I appreciate it for that reason.
