My Top 10 Movies of 2017

IMDb

There’s almost nothing movie fans love more than making lists, and honestly, maybe that’s one of the things I love so much about movies. I’ve always loved to rank things, whether it is movies, favorite baseball players, or memes. So with the decade coming to a close, it is the perfect time to do an annual retrospective on each year in the decade, continuing with 2017.

(Throughout this series, I'll be using the Letterboxd release dates to determine which year's list to put each film on.)

IMDb

10. Gifted – I'm a sucker for touching and heartwarming movies. Gifted is both of these taken to the highest level. Chris Evans and Mckenna Grace have such a real parent-child kind of chemistry and love between each other that you can't help but love and root for them.

IMDb

9. The Big Sick – This movie is an interesting look at the way that relationships can sometimes be one-sided. It's really quite sad at times, even though the real life story worked out in the end. Kumail Nanjiani is a real star and this movie only proves it.

IMDb

8. The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected) – I love the way that Noah Baumbach is able to craft movies that seem completely true to life, while also being funny with snappy dialogue, and deeply moving. The realness of this movie draws you in, but the flawless writing and emotion will make you stay.

IMDb

7. John Wick 2 – This is my favorite of the John Wick movies. I think this series succeeds the most when it sticks to the best action possible. You don't need a deep story with meaningful themes when the action is just so freaking awesome to watch.

IMDb

6. Thor: Ragnarok – Taika Waititi is exactly what the Thor franchise needed. Yes, it feels incongruous with the two previous movies, but man, it's just so fun and hilarious. This is one of the most rewatchable MCU movies for me simply because of the high entertainment value.

IMDb

5. Paddington 2 – Always listen to Aunt Lucy. The life lessons that Paddington's aunt gives him are what sets this series apart from other children's series with an animated character superimposed on the real world. It's a like if Wes Anderson made a kid's movie - this movie is just awesome.

IMDb

4. Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi – This has become my favorite entry in the Star Wars Sequel Trilogy. It understands the Prequels and has Luke Skywalker explain them in a few lines of dialogue, and that is just incredible. On top of that, it has some of the best action in any Star Wars movie. Rian Johnson is a genius.

IMDb

3. Dunkirk – This is probably the lowest you'll ever see a Christopher Nolan music on one of my top 10 lists, but it's still a perfect movie. He is one of the most original and creative filmmakers to come along in a long time, and this movie is just evidence of that fact. It's one of the best war movies ever made and will be a forever classic.

IMDb

2. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 – I never thought I could like an MCU movie more than the original Guardians movie, but its direct sequel is the one to top it. This movie takes everything you love from its predecessor and turns up the dial, all while bringing deeper messages that make me legitimately feel things that no other MCU movie has done for me.

IMDb

1. Get Out – The movie that took the country by storm and provided the revelation of Jordan Peele's filmmaking genius and Daniel Kaluuya's star power. This is a movie that deals with race, family, relationships, and societal norms in America - it's scary and funny, but it's also terrifying because it doesn't seem too unrealistic. It's a perfect movie that became an instant classic.
